Campion remains champion

BIX’S Jill Campion successfully retained her women’s over-55 British Open tournament title last weekend.

BIX’S Jill Campion successfully retained her women’s over-55 British Open tournament title last weekend.

Campion dominated her quarter final match against last year’s runner-up Sarah Howlett at Colets Health and Fitness Club, winning 9-4, 9-5, 9-6. In the semi-final she defeated Welsh player Lynne Davies 9-3, 9-2, 9-5. In the final Campion came from behind to defeat Lesley Sturgess 5-9, 2-9, 9-2, 9-2, 9-1.

Speaking after her win, Henley Squash Club player Campion said: “When I was 2-0 down I thought I was going to lose 3-0.

“At the beginning of the third game I told myself to relax and vary my shots more. This paid off and I soon found myself 4-2 up as I relaxed.

“Having won the third game, I knew I had to keep the pressure on in the fourth which I managed to do. In the fifth it was all about staying focused and not easing up on the pressure. The last three games were a lot harder than the score suggests.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have retained my title. I am now looking forward to a bit of downtime, before preparing for the World Masters which are being held in Johannesburg in September.”
