MORE than 600 people took to the Thames for the fifth annual Henley Mile swim.

Elite open water swimmers were joined by enthusiastic amateurs for the event at Temple Island Meadows on Sunday as competitors attempted to complete the mile-long route along the Henley Royal Regatta course.

Olympic bronze medallist Cassie Patten, a freestyle swimmer, gave a talk and showed the crowds her medal from the 2008 Beijing Games, as well as holding a coaching session for youngsters.

The overall winner was Jack Beddoes, from Swansea, with a time of 16 minutes and 38 seconds.

He said: ?I?ve done the Henley Classic before but never the mile. I came second in the Classic last year so I wanted to come back and win. The course was really good.?
