Theatre to meet council over sign

THE chairman of trustees at the Kenton Theatre is to meet with Henley Town Council to discuss new plans to erect an illuminated sign outside the venue.

Ed Simons says he wants to work with the council after the theatre lost an appeal against the refusal of planning permission for a sign last month.

The theatre had wanted to erect the 3.7m x 60cm burgundy aluminium sign, which was designed to make the Grade II-listed New Street venue more visible.

The town council’s planning committee objected and South Oxfordshire District Council turned down the application. The decision was confirmed by planning inspector Tim Wood at the apppeal.

Mr Wood said the sign would “fail to preserve the special interest of the listed building” and “would not preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the conservation area”.
