Enchanting tale for this April

THE Mill at Sonning’s new production is the UK première of the major award-winning play Enchanted April.

Enchanted April was a novel written in 1922 by Elizabeth von Arnim and adapted for the stage by Matthew Barber and for the screen in the Nineties.

The movie — starring Joan Playwright, Alfred Molina and Miranda Richardson — is the story of four very different English ladies who go on holiday to a secluded castle on the coast of Italy.

At first the four women clash, but then, inspired by their new surroundings, they begin to bloom, rediscovering themselves in ways that they could never have imagined. It has been described as “a beautiful and enchanting play” which will transport the audience into picturesque Tuscany, among the wisteria blossoms and Mediterranean sunshine.

The production stars Hildegard Neil as Mrs Graves, whose most celebrated role was playing Cleopatra opposite Charlton Heston’s Anthony in the 1972 film Anthony and Cleopatra.
