Dashwood sisters relive their plight in new adaptation

IT was one of the masterpiece novels that fell from the pen of Jane Austen, and a film that made a household name of Kate Winslet.

Now Sense and Sensibility, the stage version, is coming to the Watermill Theatre near Newbury.

The story, adapted for the theatre by Jessica Swale, is about sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.

Left penniless after their wealthy uncle cheats them of their fortune, the sisters are forced to leave the comforts of Norland Park and relocate to a cold Devonshire cottage.

But when a devilishly handsome stranger arrives at Barton Cottage, the Dashwood girls are convinced that their fortunes are about to change forever.
