Review: Frufru thrills in frilly knicker tale

IMAGINE the chaos that could result when two friends with a small cottage industry designing lingerie sneak secretly away from their husbands to clinch a £5 million deal with a world-famous fashion designer.

That chaos is rocking audiences with laughter at the Mill at Sonning as the unlikely plot of Who’s Under Where? (get the pun?) unfolds in the hands of a capable and game cast who are not afraid to exploit each farcical situation that presents itself to the full.

Not only have Sybil Brunt (Susie Emmett) and Jane Pritchard (Janine Leigh) kept the details of their business from their husbands, they have also been raiding their bank accounts to fund it. But the husbands have become suspicious, and on the pretext of going on a fishing trip they follow their wives to London to find out what’s going on. The answer is plenty, as male models are booked and cancelled, and the opportunities for misunderstandings become more and more convoluted.

Sonning favourite Steven Pinder returns as the hapless George Brunt. He is joined by the wonderful Mark Curry as Paul Pritchard, the other half of a double act that often comes somewhere between Morecambe and Wise and the Chuckle Brothers.

Not to give too much away, let’s just say that he wears his costume extremely well, and was much appreciated by the audience if the screams of laughter were anything to go by.

Another Sonning favourite, Patrick Monckton, gave a joyous and believable performance as the extravagantly-named Signor Fruferelli, and the performances of Eric Carte and Dale Monie as security guard Roger Hodge and male model Sebastian added enormously to the fun.

lWho’s Under Where? runs until August 24, and then from September 6 to 28. For tickets call the box office on 0118 969 8000.
