Stars put plight of bears top

TWO fund-raising events being held in Henley and nearby Sonning this weekend are putting the plight of 400 Asiatic black bears living in China and Vietnam at the top of the agenda.

On Sunday, an art exhibition featuring the work of celebrated wildlife artist Joanna May will be held at Phyllis Court and in the evening actor Peter Egan will be joined by celebrity friends for a performance of humorous poems, songs, anecdotes and limericks at the Mill at Sonning.

Peter is well known as a film, stage and TV actor and for his roles in Chariots Of Fire, The Wedding Date, and TV’s Ever Decreasing Circles, amongst many more. He is also the UK Ambassador and passionate supporter of the animal welfare charity, Animals Asia, which is working to end cruelty and restore respect for animals across Asia.

Joanna May has held several exhibitions in support of wildlife charities including Tusk, Elephant Family and the Gerald Durrell Foundation. She was interviewed about her work on Springwatch in 2006 and her work has sold at Christie’s auctions and is found in two of Raymond Blanc’s bedroom suites at his famous Hotel Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons.

Joanna said: “I have painted many animals and raised money for conservation through my work but I was inspired to paint the Moon Bear when I met Rula Lenska at the Animal Art Fair in London in 2012. I have put most of my year into producing five very detailed paintings of bears trying to connect our love of bears to childhood memories of related nursery rhymes and poems.”

Peter has persuaded good friends Rick Wakeman (keyboard player from the rock group Yes), Rula Lenska, Miles Jupp and the Beau Bow Belles to join him in a lighthearted evening to raise funds not only for Animals Asia but for his other favourite charity All Dogs Matter.

Tickets for the afternoon event at Joanna May’s exhibition are available on request from Joanna May by calling 01380 871821 or by emailing joanna@joannamay.com

Tickets for An Evening With Peter Egan And Friends are available from the Mill at Sonning box office on 0118 969 8000 or online at www.millatsonning.com
