Comedy duo take a punt at the Kenton

THE Kenton Theatre’s maintenance funds have received an early Christmas present thanks to comedians Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis.

THE Kenton Theatre’s maintenance funds have received an early Christmas present thanks to comedians Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis.

The two star stand-ups are coming to the theatre for a sell-out show on December 5. It is a warm-up before their Life On The Road tour that starts in January.

As is the custom for preview events the ticket prices are kept below those charged for the tour and while Steve and Hugh’s team went for a ticket price of £12 they have allowed the Kenton to charge £17 a ticket — with the extra £5 going to the funds that maintain the country’s fourth oldest working theatre.

The Kenton’s managing director Wendy Bowsher said: “We are thrilled to have two such big names coming to the theatre and not surprisingly it is a complete sell-out. But to have such a bonus of over £1,000 to our funds is tremendous.

“It costs a tremendous amount to keep the theatre up to the high standard we set as it is a constant process with such an old theatre.

“I think the evening will be a great experience for those lucky enough to have tickets as they will get the chance to see two top performers fine-tuning their act in what is a smaller venue than they usually play.

“It will provide the audience with the opportunity to see how much work goes into getting a show on the road — and the Henley reaction could have an effect on what makes the completed show.”

The popular duo have been producing some of the country’s finest comedy for more than a decade.

They came to prominence as half of The Mary Whitehouse Experience with David Baddiel and Robert Newman and have gone on to star in many TV and radio productions, including The Now Show, It’s Been A Bad Week (both on BBC Radio 4) and BBC1’s My Hero.

Their keen eye for observation produces a stream of satire and their ability to highlight the absurd ensures their shows remain hugely popular. But Henley will also remember their generosity to the Kenton Theatre.
