Macbeth at the festival

A PRODUCTION of Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be staged on Mill Green at this year’s Wargrave Festival.

A PRODUCTION of Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be staged on Mill Green at this year’s Wargrave Festival.

Wargrave Theatre Workshop has chosen the play for its “Shakespeare on the Green” show at this year’s festival, which will take place over two weeks in June.

Temporary covered seating will be erected on the green for the show’s run from June 10 to 13.

The play will be directed by Joe Haynes, who lives in Church Street with his wife Joy and has directed five previous productions for the festival.

He said: “I picked Macbeth because in the past I’ve always directed comedies and with the Scottish referendum last year I got thinking about James I and everything that happened with Scotland and England. Macbeth doesn’t have to be dark, you can make it up-to-date and cast it anywhere. I really like the idea of setting it in a Twenties gangland scene. The words will remain Shakespeare’s all the way through, though. It’s a well-known and popular play and one of those that everyone wants to see.”

Mr Haynes, who has lived in Wargrave for 39 years, hopes regulars will audition for the play as well as members of other theatre groups.

He said: “Wargrave is the best place to live and we have a thriving theatre group which I’ve been part of for 39 years. I’m looking for actors from other societies who know the play to come along and listen to my ideas.”

Mr Haynes will be casting next month and wants to hear from anyone interested in acting or being involved backstage.

A reading will be held at Woodclyffe Hostel on Sunday, February 1 at 7pm. Auditions will follow at the same venue on Thursday, February 5 at 8pm and Sunday, February 8 at 8pm. For more information, call Mr Haynes on 0118 940 3962 or visit www.wargravetheatre.co.uk
