Theatre returns with rep season

THE long-held tradition of weekly repertory theatre is to be revived at Theatre Royal Windsor.

THE long-held tradition of weekly repertory theatre is to be revived at Theatre Royal Windsor.

Six plays will be staged from Tuesday to Saturday each week, from May 26 to July 4.

In the classic repertory style, which Theatre Royal Windsor has a history of dating back to 1938, thanks to former director John Counsell, the same actors will rehearse and perform a range of genres from comedy to thriller and modern, beginning with a fabulous farce entitled Pardon Me, Prime Minister.

Set in the Prime Minister’s office in Downing Street, the saucy romp proves parliamentary life is anything but boring as chaos and confusion reign and a selection of scantily clad women disturb the PM and Chancellor’s budget preparations.

That will be followed by Sweet Revenge, the Francis Durbridge thriller, from June 2 to 6, Daphne Du Maurier’s romantic drama September Tide, from June 9 to 13, and Noel Coward’s comedy Hay Fever, between June 16 and 20.

The fifth production is Alan Ayckbourn’s dark comedy Joking Apart, from June 23 to 27, before the season ends from June 30 to July 4 with Amy’s View, by David Hare, a fairly modern offering which won Best Play of the Year at The Critics’ Awards 1997.

Theatre Royal Windsor executive director Robert Miles described rep as a “breeding ground for talent”, adding: “Under John Counsell’s visionary leadership, Theatre Royal Windsor established itself as one of England’s best known and most respected repertory companies and started many a future star’s career.

“Now using the best emerging talent and seasoned professionals, we aim to put rep in Windsor back on the theatrical map, giving our audiences high-quality entertainment as well as the opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow in our intimate Edwardian theatre.”

Each play starts at 8pm, with matinees on Thursdays at 2.30pm and Saturdays at 4.45pm.

Tickets range from £10 to £20 â?? call 01753 853888 or see www.theatreroyalwindsor.co.uk, or watch all six for the price of four, although this offer is not available on the website.
