YOUNG people attending a monthly music workshop are being invited to try out for places in a band
YOUNG people attending a monthly music workshop are being invited to try out for places in a band due to perform at the Henley Festival and Music on the Meadows events this summer — and bring their friends along too.
Held at Magoos bar in Hart Street on the last Wednesday of each month, Acoustic@Magoos — A@M for short — caters for 13- to 19-year-olds and offers musical masterclasses led by industry professionals.
The sessions normally run from 6pm to 9pm and are open to musicians and non-musicians alike.
But with a busy summer of music in prospect, the group has announced that it will be holding a series of open auditions and rehearsals in the coming months — starting on Wednesday (January 27).
Co-founder Maggie Atkinson said the doors would open at 5.45pm for a 6pm start, with the first hour being devoted to a special planning meeting — which parents are also invited to attend.
Then at 7pm acoustics expert Dr Stuart Colam will be giving a “sound techie masterclass” to which all are welcome.
This will be followed by the first of the open audition sessions, overseen by Jayson “JJ” Jaurigue of Eight Ray Music, before the evening is rounded off with a fun jamming session.
JJ, who is also one of the group’s sponsors, said: “It’s important we give young people these opportunities to express their talents, build confidence in different situations and be inspired by professional musicians, learning from and encouraging one another. That’s what A@M is all about.”
The auditions are open to all young locally based musicians aged 13 to 19 (Henley Festival) and seven to 21 years (Music on the Meadows). Prior to the Henley Festival and Music on the Meadows concerts, which take place on July 10 and 16 respectively, A@M members may also have a chance to perform as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in May.
