A STRONG contingent of 21 athletes from Henley Junior Triathlon Club battled for qualifying points at Sunday’s regional race event in Bicester.

In the first of this year’s British Triathlon series of regional competitions, club members fought high winds and driving rain to secure both qualifying points and positions.

This was the first full distance, high performance, triathlon event for more than half the Henley athletes.

The competition comprised many of the best junior triathletes from the south central region, seeking points towards selection for their regional team and entry to the Inter-Regional Championships.

The swim portion of the race took place in Bicester Community College pool, and the bike and run routes on the college playing fields. By far the toughest leg was the bike, with an unforgiving combination of wet grass, heavy mud, howling winds and horizontal rain. All the Henley athletes finished the course with convincing performances from Saoirse McClure-Fisher who came third in the U14 girls, Hugo Warner who finished fourth in the U14 boys, Ben Doyle fifth in the U12 boys and Tristan Flowers who ran the fastest run leg in the U12 boys’ section.
