IT was the East Germans’ day at Henley Royal Regatta on Saturday, when they won all five finals they competed in. This was a record number of wins for an overseas country, surpassing the Russians with three victories. There was merit in some of the performances put up by home crews. Tideway Scullers battled magnificently before going under to TSC Berlin in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup. The weather was fine and sunny throughout the regatta but the river conditions were not conducive to record times.
The annual area sports meeting of the South Oxon Primary Schools Sports Association was held at Sonning Common Primary School on Wednesday. The trophies were presented by the Mayor of Henley, Ald ARB Hobbs. The number of pupils competing was 340.
Thirty-four residents of Market Place, Henley, signed a petition brought before the town council at its meeting on Tuesday complaining of the annoyance caused by youths who assemble in Market Place on most evenings between 8 and midnight. The petition said: “Their general behaviour, together with the constant revving up of motor bikes and cars and the use of the road as a race track, constitutes a public nuisance.”
