THERE were celebrations on Wednesday when Henley won gold in the annual Britain in Bloom competition. The town lifted the prize in the town category for the Thames and Chilterns area, ahead of Kidlington in second place and Marlow in third place. With Henley notching 177 points, it is the only town chosen to go forward to the UK national finals next year.
A granary based in Remenham has been destroyed by fire. The historic building, a popular Thames landmark, was burnt to the ground in last week’s blaze. It is still unclear how the fire started, the only possible clue being a disposable barbecue grill found in the ashes.
The Mayor of Henley has launched a blistering attack on the Henley Municipal Charities, accusing it of turning its back on the town’s interests. Councillor Barry Wood claims the charity killed off the chance to reintroduce a Victorian boardwalk alongside the Thames by denying permission to use the area outside the Angel on the Bridge, which is owned by the charity.
