Turning back the pages

THERE has been a generous response to the appeal for funds made on behalf of the Henley Festival, which opens with a civic ceremony on Sunday, June 18, and will continue throughout the week with a varied programme of attractions. Mr Terence Verity, honorary director of the festival, reports that the generous response to the appeal is a great encouragement to the organisers. He said: “We need to raise a further £750 to cover the cost of printing and publicity and, in particular, the Henley Exhibition.”

A BBC film unit returned to Henley on Friday afternoon to shoot another sequence for the serial The Forsyte Saga. The sequence filmed will be seen in episode 21 later this year and will show 38-year-old actor Eric Porter, who plays the part of 70-year-old Soames Forsyte, attempting to hit a golf ball across the river by Conways Bridge.

On Tuesday morning, Henley fire brigade were called out to attend a petrol tanker in Bell Street, a tyre on which had caught fire. The firemen found one of the inside rear wheels was alight and soon put it out. The tanker, which was carrying 2,000 gallons of derv mixture, was moved into King’s Road car park where its load was transferred to another tanker.
