MONDAY last was not only the start of just another week, it was a day that Henley is hardly likely to forget. This was the day when both residents and visitors enjoyed a colourful occasion in the form of a mammoth carnival and procession as part of the fifth local observance of this year’s centenary of the British Red Cross Society.

The minister of housing and local government has decided to allow the appeal of Messrs. J E Bull against the refusal of Oxfordshire County Council to permit the siting of a dwelling house on land at the Grey House, Shiplake.

Progress in education should be made by encouraging different experiments to suit different areas rather than by shouting slogans and imposing one type of school on the whole country. This was one of the views expressed by journalist Douglas Brown at an Any Questions? session at Henley Town Hall on May 30.
