HENLEY Rugby Club has kicked into touch a takeover bid which would have seen it relocate to Oxford. Firoz Kassam, Oxford United Football Club’s millionaire chairman, approached the Hawks’ management committee with a £200,000-plus proposal to take control and move the Hawks to the Kassam Stadium. The news of the failed bid comes in the week the Hawks, who are struggling to avoid relegation, announced that head coach Nigel Dudding and director of rugby Rob Heginbotham would be standing down at the end of the season.

Canon Martyn Griffiths was officially installed as rector of Henley with Remenham on Saturday. Mr Griffiths, who comes from Preston, took over from the Rev David Pritchard, who left Henley in May to take up his new role as Canon Precentor at Ely Cathedral. The ceremony was presided over by the Rt Rev Colin Fletcher, Bishop of Dorchester.

The hotel being built on the site of the old Brakspear’s brewery will be open for business on March 7. Hotel du Vin will be the seventh in the chain. It will have 37 bedrooms and six suites, all with luxury bathrooms.
