HENLEY'S triple Olympic medal winner Mary Rand set a world indoor record for the long jump in Los Angeles on Saturday. Her jump of 20ft 10in put an inch on the worldâ??s previous indoor best made by Tatan Schellkanova, a Russian, two years ago. When Mrs Rand won the Olympic title at Tokyo in October she jumped 22ft 2in.

For some weeks past the brick wall on the side of the footpath leading from St Andrew's Road to Western Road in Henley has been gradually pulled down. The bricks of the high wall are being dislodged one by one and pushed into the gardens so that a big gap has been made in the wall. It is difficult to think who is responsible for this wanton destruction, whether it is youths or not.

A â??topping-outâ? ceremony took place at lunchtime yesterday at Tollgate Cottage in Henley to mark the completion of the roof. The building has been constructed by the owner, Mr A L Walton, by Messrs Walden & Son (Henley) after the demolition of the original cottage which adjoined Henley Bridge.
