ON Monday, June 7, at 6.30 in the evening, the Rev John Frederio Maul, Hon Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, and for the past 32 years rector of Henley, passed away peacefully in the rectory which he loved so well. His health had been gradually failing of late years and he had been seriously exercised in his mind lately as to whether he had the physical strength still to carry on his great work and had more than once contemplated resignation or seeking another sphere of work.
Shortly after four o’clock this morning a fire broke out on the Henley Union premises, resulting in considerable damage to a range of buildings used as paint stores, coal stores, oakum stores and lavatories. The blaze originated in the paint store and was discovered by one of the housemaids. The house staff quickly assembled and under the direction of the master (Mr F W Cave) got to work from the hydrants on the premises.
