DRASTIC cuts in the number of services at Townlands Hospital are being proposed in a confidential report leaked

DRASTIC cuts in the number of services at Townlands Hospital are being proposed in a confidential report leaked to the Henley Standard. The hospital is set to lose its beds and day services and would miss out on major capital investment if the proposals in are approved. But the report by the South East and South West Oxfordshire Primary Care Trusts supports the hospital’s minor injuries unit and outpatients services.

The medieval bell tower of St. Peter and St Paul’s Church in Shiplake has withstood more than 800 years of wind and weather and attacks of ivy on its limestone face. But now the tower, built in 1140, needs tender loving care to preserve it for future generations. The eroded stonework needs repairs costing £65,000 and while the church has £40,000 left in the kitty from its Millennium Appeal, for roof and drainage work and a new organ and vestry, it is still £25,000 short.

Eric Bristow might be a five-times world champion but all his skills were no match for a determined member of the Henley Darts League. Paul O’Brien, 27, from Ewelme, who has Down’s syndrome, was among the 16 players who took on Bristow at an exhibition at the Nettlebed Club and one of three players to beat him.
