ABOUT 100 people wound their way through the roads and lanes of Shiplake on Rogation Sunday

ABOUT 100 people wound their way through the roads and lanes of Shiplake on Rogation Sunday to ask God’s blessing on the fields, gardens and life of the parish. The procession assembled at Lashbrook Chapel of Ease, where opening prayers were said and a lesson was by Master Donald Perchard. Moving to Shiplake station, the vicar, Rev John Overton, prayed for those who travel to work for a patient and considerate use of the roads during the summer months and for God’s blessing on the gardens.

Haileywood in Shiplake, a Tudor-style house built on rising ground with good views over agricultural and park land, is being sold by Richard Todd, the stage and screen star who is now playing Lord Goring in Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband at the Strand Theatre. The price asked for the freehold is £39,000 and the agents are Knight, Frank and Rutley.

At an informal ceremony Mr F D Pattisson, London divisional manager of British Railways Western Region, presented clocks and watches to six of his staff who have retired after giving more than 40 years’ service each. Mr Pattisson expressed his warmest thanks to them all and, in particular, Mr C F E Harvey, who was assistant divisional manager at Paddington and lives at Hewgate Court, Henley.
