Subsidy snag

PLANS to save Whitchurch and Whitchurch Hill’s bus service by increasing council tax have hit an obstacle.

Whitchurch and Goring Heath parish councils, which currently fund Thames Travel’s 143 service to Reading, have discovered there is a legal limit on how much they are allowed to pay a commercial bus operator.

Oxfordshire County Council is withdrawing its £11,000 subsidy from April 1 and the operator won’t run the service commercilly, meaning the money must be found from elsewhere.
