Foster’s double strike enough to sink 10-man county rivals
Published 11/02/13

HENLEY moved up to third place in Division 1 of the MBBO Regional League after beating county rivals Oxford at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

The game started off as a tight affair, both teams holding on to the ball trying to find space. The first break away saw Foster play a ball through to Green who saw his attempt saved by the Oxford keeper.

The Henley back four of Meads, Gaze, Baker and Woolfrey were holding the ball well and not giving the Oxford forwards any chance on goal. Henley took the lead when a short corner at the other end of the pitch was converted by Foster after good work from Ross Hibberd.

Foster and Mortimer in midfield were starting to boss the game putting pressure on the Oxford midfield. Henley had a goal disallowed from a short corner just before half-time.

The second half started with more intensity than the first, with Oxford looking to push forward to get back into the game. With this came more space and a few half chances were being created. Cox in goal was tested on a few occasions and made some important stops at the Henley goal. However, an Oxford goal soon followed from a rare mistake in the Henley defence.

The game then saw an Oxford player given a red card for lashing out at a Henley player and this meant more space for the Henley team to push forward for that all-important winner.

The Oxford defence were starting to buckle under the increasing pressure from the Henley team and following another disallowed goal from a short corner, Henley got the winner with an individual goal from vice-captain Foster.
