A HAT-TRICK from midfielder Pete Ashman was enough to secure all three Oxfordshire Senior League Division 1 points for hosts Watlington Town and leapfrog Yarnton on Saturday.
Watlington started brightly and created chances with Stevenson cleverly lobbing the on-rushing keeper after a Mcniffe through ball only to see his effort glide just past the wrong side of the post.
Despite Watlington’s sustained pressure, it was the visitors that took the lead. A corner from the right was met by a Yarnton head, and although Conn in the Watlington goal got a hand to it, the ball was eventually bundled over the line.
The hosts hit back soon after. Andy Wright was on the end of a smart team move eventually powering into the penalty box only to be tripped by a defender. The referee pointed to the spot and Ashman stepped up to calmly slot the ball away to make it 1-1.
Minutes later Watlington took the lead. A whipped corner from Luke Yeulet was met by the head of Ashman who steered the ball home from close range.
In the second half Watlington’s Dan Mcniffe was denied a goal as his 30-yard shot rattled the crossbar.
On the hour mark another corner from Yeulet was again met by Ashman who headed home his third of the match.
Yarnton hit back with a goal after 75 minutes but the hosts held out to stretch their unbeaten run to three games.
