WATLINGTON TOWN were held to a 1-1 draw away to Oxfordshire Senior League Division 1 strugglers North Oxford on Saturday.
Watlington started well but it was the hosts who almost took the lead after 10 minutes when a 25-yard shot crashed off the visitors’ woodwork.
Minutes later Watlington went close when Andy Wright raced on to Steve Strong’s through ball. Wright stabbed the ball towards goal but it was well saved by the onrushing Oxford keeper.
On 26 minutes after a neat interchange down the Watlington left hand side, Allan Stevenson was bundled over in the box leaving the referee no choice but to award a penalty. Pete Ashman stepped up to slot home for his 14th of the season.
The home side responded immediately, converting a free kick from just outside the box.
Few chances were created in the second half and five minutes before fulltime an Oxford player was sent off for picking up two yellow cards.
The hosts found themselves down to nine men in the dying seconds when they had a man red-carded for dissent.
