Macdonald’s goal sends side joint top
Published 07/04/14

ROTHERFIELD UNITED U11s moved up to joint top of the division in the Oxford Youth League with a hard fought 2-1 win against CHALGROVE BLUES U11s.

In the first half Charlie Wagstaff was unlucky not to score for Rotherfield when a shot from the right wing glanced off the crossbar.

After 20 minutes Rotherfield gave away a free kick on the edge of the penalty box, but their wall didn’t stand up to the task, allowing a Chalgrove a soft goal.

The Chalgrove goalkeeper played a brave game - coming far out of his box to meet any balls that came over the top of his defence, preventing Rotherfield’s normal advantage of speed down the wing.

United made the breakthrough when Zodey Sabijan passed the ball behind the goalkeeper to the right wing where Will Graham picked it up and deftly fired it home to level the score.

United then brought on substitutes Charlie Wagstaff, Rowan Prince and Justus Larter up front to break through the four Chalgrove defence and work the ball between them to beat the goalkeeper.

In that final 15 minutes Rotherfield had 10 shots on goal but none, including a penalty, found their way into the net.

Into injury time Rotherfield were still piling on the pressure when in an action between Wagstaff, Larter to Joe Macdonald, the ball fell to Macdonald who hit it on his left foot to give United the lead.
