Greys in last-stand defence
Published 09/06/14

GREYS GREEN and the REFRESHERS enjoyed a keen contest throughout between bat and ball on Saturday.

The Refreshers were much indebted to their opener, Burrett, who held the innings together alongside good support from Halfpenny, Mohindru and H Sells.

Ahmed (2-27) and Shafqat (4-58) bowled well and although Burrett was eventually caught and bowled by Shafqat for 78, he had guided the Refreshers to 158-8 at tea.

In reply, Greys soon found themselves at 31-3 before Taylor and Perry made good progress to tip the balance back in their favour.

But when Perry went for 36, the bowlers gradually regained control. The result was still in doubt until Taylor was stumped for a hard-fought 50, whereupon Burton returned to the fray with telling effect and Greys lost five wickets for four runs. The Refreshers scented victory but they were finally thwarted by the last pairing of Dennis and Jackson who successfully defended the final three overs of a terrific game.

GORING elected to bat first against GREYS GREEN on Sunday and initially did well to withstand some effective bowling from the opening pair of Shafqat and Taylor.

However, losing their second wicket at 28, Goring then lost wickets at regular intervals.

At one stage they were 59-9, but Wincott hit out to make his side’s top score of 21 before they were dismissed for 91, with seven good catches helping towards their good figures.

Goring made Greys fight for their runs, with Crawford, especially, bowling at real pace and it required considerable skill and good defence from the Greys opening pair of Knight and Evans. Unfortunately for Goring, once Crawford and Kent departed from the attack, their back-up bowlers didn’t carry quite the same threat.

The opening pair reached 71 before Knight fell for 35 and although three more wickets were taken in quick succession, Evans guided Greys home with a well-deserved, unbeaten 41.
