Competition is hot at 10km
Published 16/06/14

ALMOST 500 runners took part in the 32nd Wargrave 10km race in blazing sunshine on Sunday.

Magician Paul Daniels, who lives in the village, officially started the event for the sixth year running.

He blew an air horn despite having one hand bandaged following an operation.

The race, which is organised by the Wargrave Runners, started at the recreation ground in Recreation Road and the runners followed a circular route through Crazies Hill and Cockpole Green.

The winner was Matthieu Ribault, of Thames Valley Harriers, with a time of 34 minutes and 36 seconds.

Three members of Wargrave Runners finished in the top 20 and the first under 18 runner was Oscar Gutierrez, from Wargrave.Andy Meader, of Wargrave Runners, said the good weather helped attract about 60 entries on the day but two were unable to finish in the heat and needed medical treatment.

“It was definitely one of the hotter years,” he said.

“We had lots of good reviews from people saying how well organised it was.

“It was a good day and hopefully enjoyed by all those who took part. It was well supported with people cheering along the route.”

The event is expected to have raised more than 4,000, which will go to national cancer charities and a number of local charities.

Two fun runs for primary and senior school children preceded the main race and attracted a record 140 entries.
