AFC Henley Under-13s help shoppers
Published 03/01/14

PLAYERS from AFC Henley under-13s raised money for their Easter tour of Germany by packing customers’ bags at Tesco.

Ten members of the team wore their team strips as they spent six hours at the store, off Reading Road, Henley, helping customers with their shopping.

The boys raised £463.32, almost half of their fund-raising target of £1,000, which will go towards the cost of their travel.

Store manager Roly Lumm organised the initiative after agreeing to sponsor the team’s strip earlier this year.

Hayden Palmer, 12, said: “The hardest bit was putting things in the bags in the right order. To start off with we weren’t very good but we got better as they day went on.”

Josh Steede, 13, added: “Everybody was very generous.”

Jenny Green, whose son Harry was one of the packers, said: “We are very thankful to Tesco for allowing us the opportunity to do this. It was a learning experience for the boys.”

The team’s tour to Leichlingen is held each Easter as the towns are twinned. In October, youth teams from Leichlingen visited Henley for a weekend tournament.

The under-13s plan to organise another event to raise the rest of the money they need.
