Local footballer to play at Wembley
Published 11/04/14

AN amateur footballer from Henley is hoping to score at Wembley after reaching the final of a search to find the best non-professional players.

Tom Wilson, 25, has made it to the last 32 out of thousands of applicants.

He will take part in a match at the national stadium on Monday watched by football League scouts.

Former professionals David Ginola, Ray Parlour, Alex McLeish and Steve Clarke who will coach and manage the teams.

Mr Wilson, a former Henley Town player whose parents Simon and Jocelyn live in Rotherfield Road, said: “I canít believe it. Iím still pinching myself and I canít wait. My aim now is to get a goal because I play up front.

I know my chances of playing football full-time are probably small but the chance of playing at Wembley at my age is amazing.”

Mr Wilson, a former pupil of St Maryís School in St Andrewís Road decided to take part in the Budweiser Open Trials after being persuaded by a friend.

He made it through two trials to reach the final where he will be watched by his parents, Simon and Jocelyn, brother Billy, 15, sister Poppy, 22, and grandmother Doreen, of Milton Close, Henley.

Mr Wilson, a Blackburn Rovers fan who now lives in Woodley, will stay at a hotel near the stadium on Sunday night after watching Hull play Sheffield Utd in the FA Cup semi-final.

Highlights of Mondayís game will be shown by BT sport on Saturday May 17, the day of the FA Cup Final.
