Five matches in 15 days for stretched Royals
Published 07/08/14

READING face an early season injury crisis as Nigel Adkins’ thread-bare squad will be tested to the limit with five matches in the opening 15 days of the new campaign.

However, according to media reports, the Royals could well add to their squad before Saturday’s first Championship match of the season away to Wigan Athletic.

Going into the match at the DW Stadium, the Royals will be without Garath McCleary, Jem Karacan, Danny Guthrie, Danny Williams and Stephen Kelly, who are all ruled out through injury.

This is coupled with the departure of a host of players in the summer, including captain Jobi McAnuff and striker Adam Le Fondre.

The Royals, who have not signed a player for just over a year due to the ongoing takeover saga at the club, are reported to be closing in on several deals to bring players in.

The Thai consortium who have agreed to buy the club are just awaiting ratification from the relevant authorities before the deal goes through.

Despite this chairman Sir John Madejski reported this week that the consortium may stump up funds ahead of the completion of the deal in order for Adkins to bring in new blood.

The Royals have been linked with several playings including a double swoop for Nottingham Forest’s former Reading striker Simon Cox and Jamie Mackie.

Reading have also been linked with a move for Crystal Palace striker Glenn Murray while defender Anton Ferdinand was spotted at Madejski Stadium during the Royals’ 3-1 final friendly defeat against Swansea City last Saturday. The defender is currently unattached to any club.

Meanwhile Samrit Bunditkitsada, part of the consortium buying the club, was reported to have flown into the country on Wednesday evening accompanied by Thai international midfielder Pokklaw Anan.

Following Saturday’s opening match of the season Reading face Newport County at Madejski Staidum on Tuesday (kick-off 8pm) in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
