HENLEY Rowing Club’s squads achieved further success at the Walton Small Boats head last weekend.
The event is a 3,000 metre time trial held over four separate races throughout the day and included many international competitors.
Despite the poor weather conditions Henley’s women’s double scull of Alice Bentley and Bethan Thomas won the Senior 2 event and were the fastest overall women’s double. Thomas had already secured third place in the Senior 3 singles event.
The junior boys competed in the U16 events with Wittaker and Casey, and Spink and Gordon finishing third and fourth respectively in the doubles event which was of a very high standard. Casey also achieved a creditable fifth place in the singles.
The senior mens squad was represented by Jack Thompson competing in a composite double with Molesey Boat Club, with a win in the elite class.
These successes followed on from an outstanding performance the previous weekend when Tom Hope won the U17 singles event at Hampton Junior Head, beating all but three in the older age group. This is an event in which all potential junior international juniors take part. Hope will now concentrate on the next set of trials for the national team.
Four members of the mens squad will also be taking part in the national team trials this comming weekend. Their senior mens and womens squads will then prepare for the winter training camp in Seville, Spain, which begins on January 15.
