CHECKENDON achieved a vital home victory against Berkshire League Division 1 strugglers WALTHAM ST. LAWRENCE on Saturday.
Waltham’s veteran opener Paul Ashton gave the visitors a steady start with a sensible 48 taking his side to 66—7.
However, an accurate spell from Ben Shepherd was followed by the devastating combination of Aidan Trotter’s left arm spin and the medium pace swing of Dave Petherick.
Captain Aidan finished with 5—17 as the visiting team were dismissed for 117. The Checkendon side took eight catches in all including two by wicket-keeper John Acland-Hood, standing up to the stumps.
The home side had reached 47—3 in reply as the weather closed in when Acland-Hood was joined by Paul Holland. These two then put on 73 undefeated in 11 overs as Checkendon raced to beat the rain as well as the opposition. Only 23.1 overs were required in total for the home team to reach their target.

TOTAL (3 wkts.) 120e_SClBA second-wicket partnership of 124 between Greg Bennett and Peter Simmons put visitors NETTLEBED in a strong position at CHECKENDON on Sunday. Bennett’s stylish 65 and Simmons’ more unorthodox 84 took Nettlebed to 145—1.
Checkendon came back into the game thanks to the medium pace bowling of Jake Cook who took 5—20 in only five overs. A target of 215 to win was potentially attainable for the home side but a combination of good seam bowling from Nettlebed’s JJ Moss, who took 5—27, and some ordinary batting from Checkendon handed the initiative to the visitors.
Vikas Chib did his best to turn things around with a daring half century which included four sixes but even the return of Ravi Vendanthappa after retiring hurt with a blow to the face could not save the home side from defeat by 71 runs.
