SPECTATORS enjoyed racing, rides and refreshments at the Goring and Streatley Regatta.
Saturday’s event at Bishop’s Farm in Streatley was organised by Goring Gap Boat Club.
More than £5,000 was raised on the day, which will be matched by Sportsmatch, a government scheme that supports community projects, to which the club belongs. The money will be used for providing rowing lessons for disadvantaged children.
Regatta chairman Brian Barnes said: “It was an excellent day. People were worried about the weather but we didn’t have so much as a drop of rain. By midday we were very busy and the beer tent was packed, which is a good indicator at this sort of event.”
As well as the rowing competitions, there was a funfair, craft tents and stalls, a hog roast provided by Goring butchers Simmons & Sons, ferret racing and a giant slide.
Mr Barnes said: “We wanted to ensure the event had a local feel so we had each sponsor race each other with a novice crew. The whole thing is a cross between a fete and a regatta and there was a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of novices ended up in the water, which was very entertaining.” The results were: coxed four men, beginnner Skull Duggery, intermediate Rigged With Beer, Experienced Eco Offsetters; coxed four mixed, beginner Bowshers Heroes, Experienced Oartrocious; coxed four women, beginner A Glory, beginner B Dynamic Divas, intermediate Captain Skippy and the Big Pants, experienced Cox Less; dongala Surface Tension; children’s dongala challenge Tidal Wave; eights challenge Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club; single scull men beginner Jeremy O’Brien; experienced Rex Carter; single scull Sara Lee; corporate challenge Datasat; village challenge Goring.
