HENLEY Rowing Club has been awarded a £97,000 grant from the British Rowing Association which allows them to go ahead with plans to develop a new gymnasium.
The work, which starts in September, is part of a Sports Development Plan aiming to increase the quality of training facilities for club members and boost participation in rowing.
Developments have been planned for a number of years aiming to extend the women’s changing rooms and add a new foul drainage and treatment system.
Current land training facilities have been stretched in recent years especially with the club becoming increasingly popular.
The main club function room has been doubling up as a gym since the new clubhouse opened in 1986 and more recently the club has extended into portable cabins in the car park for weightlifting facilities.
Nigel Reed, club chairman, said: “The new developments will provide some of the best rowing facilities on the river Thames.”
“The club is thankful to Cliff Blakeway who led the fund-raising team, and to Robbie Kennedy of Spratley Studios who designed the building.”
The work is due for completion in March 2011.
