
The opening start of the season at the Springs Golf Club saw 112 people competing for the Founder’s Cup.
The competition was a pairs stableford played off full handicap. The winners were Steve Bennett and Eric King with 74 points easily beating off the challenge of Andy Wraight and Bruce Ferriman who came in second with 69 points. The only mixed pair amongst the winners were Christine and Peter Ferry on 67 points who beat Pete Hughes and Jon Stockings on countback. Nearest the pin winners were Neil Bowler and Margaret Quarterman and Nick Bott and Jenny Dickson.
The event was the opening day for the new club captains " Wendy Simon as ladies’ captain and Roger Ackerman as men’s captain. As this year is the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Springs Golf Club the day started with the extra innovation of a putting competition for all the previous captains. The winners were Sue Arrighi (captain 2005/6) for the ladies and Mike Hawes for the men (captain 2001/2).
This year’s two captains then took to the tee to take their opening drives down the l8th green. Cheered on by members on the balcony, who were sheltering from the cold winds, Wendy Simon hit a great drive against the wind of l28 yards but Roger Ackerman excelled himself with a lovely drive of over 208 yards.
Meanwhile, Jane Atkin won the Silver A Division at Henley Golf Club with 37 points on countback from Lucy Terris whilst Jacqui Thomas took the Silver B Division title with 36 points. Bronze A was won by Luisa Corbridge with 40 points whilst Andrea Smith took the Bronze B honours with 45.
The Silver A medal was won by Sarah Hillas on 71 with Jacqui Thomas taking Silver B on 70, Harriet Wynn-Jones Bronze A with 71 and Jill Irwin Bronze B on 79.
The Oxfordshire County Bronze Medal was held at Henley Golf Club last week. The winner was Harriet Wynn-Jones from Henley with a gross 88 net 68.
The top eight players went through to the Bronze Championship at The Oxfordshire on tomorrow (Saturday).
