Great and good of Britart mark

WORK by some of the country’s best-loved and most prestigious artists of the 20th century will be on show at a new exhibition opening at the Bohun Gallery in Reading Road next week.

Sculptor Henry Moore, pop artist Peter Blake and surrealist Julian Trevelyan will feature in the show, which begins a season to celebrate the gallery’s 40th anniversary.

The gallery, which has just finished a retrospective of work by Julian Trevelyan, was founded by Pat Jordan Evans, or “Mrs Bohun” as she was affectionately known by artist Maggi Hambling.

Trevelyan’s wife, Mary Fedden, whose artwork also features in the exhibition, wrote: “We both loved the gallery, and we quickly realised how professional and discerning Pat was, and what high standards she set. She has never changed in this uncompromising approach.”

Mrs Jordan Evans said: “Modern British art is on the ascendant and the Bohun Gallery is proud to have been a catalyst in its historical development. The sheer breadth and variety of British art has never been greater than during the 20th century as artists, curators and collectors have sought to forge a new style for a new age, and this diversity gathers exciting momentum as we move through the 21st century.

“As we celebrate another milestone in our history, part one of the exhibition reflects on the artists and sculptors who joined us between 1973 and 1993, many of whom are recognised as important progressional figures in 20th century art.

“The exhibition does not try to tell a single coherent story. There is simply one defining feature — and that is that each of these artists is the very best in their field.”

Work by Trevelyan and Fedden loom large in the exhibition — the association between the pair and the gallery is a long one, since Mrs Jordan Evans first spotted Trevelyan’s etchings at Durham Wharf in 1982.

Other artists to feature in the exhibition include Elizabeth Frink, who staged regular sculpture and print shows at the Bohun over the years, and Peter Blake, who launched his series of Circus Freaks at the gallery in 1979, and whose work was celebrated at a solo exhibition to mark his 80th birthday earlier this year. John Piper, Ivon Hitchens, Elisabeth Blackadder are among others represented. 40 Years Of Fine Art opens at the Bohun Gallery on Tuesday, June 11 and runs until August 17.
