Prisoners’ artwork at annual show

DRAWINGS, paintings and graphic designs produced by Category C prisoners at HMP Huntercombe Prison for foreign nationals will be on

DRAWINGS, paintings and graphic designs produced by Category C prisoners at HMP Huntercombe Prison for foreign nationals will be on display and for sale at this year’s Nettlebed Art and Craft Show.

Art is one of the many subjects taught in the prison as part of the rehabilitation process, to give basic skills and improve the self-esteem of prisoners nearing their release date in order to help them reintegrate into society.

Exhibition organiser Sarah Pye said: “The quality of some of the work has drawn many favourable comments and is a credit to the dedicated teaching staff at the prison. Subjects vary widely and reflect both experiences of the past and aspirations for the future.”

This year, some of the work will be for sale with all proceeds going to the local Sue Ryder Hospice.

The Nettlebed art society’s annual exhibition will also be showing the work of local artists and craftsmen from Henley and the surrounding areas.

The annual exhibition encourages all artists to participate in a variety of media and it accepts work from both competent hobbyists and those producing art for their living.

Mrs Pye said: “The show is always a mixture of bright and exciting work, and we look forward to welcoming you all.”

As well as paintings, ceramics and sculpture a wide selection of handmade cards and smaller items are also being exhibited. Profits from the annual exhibition are donated to local charities for use within the community.

The show will be held in the Nettlebed Village Community Hall and at the primary school in Nettlebed High Street.

This year, Lady McAlpine will open the show next Saturday, August 10, at 12 noon.

Last year, the show was opened by Sir John Madejski.

Opening times are 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday, August 11. Homemade cakes and teas provided by Nettlebed WI will be available all day. There is ample parking and entry is free. New artists are welcome to join the group and entry forms can be obtained from nettlebedas@yahoo.co.uk
