Road safety measures

A 20MPH speed limit, a zebra crossing and a weight restriction could be introduced on a Benson road near a site earmarked for 400 new homes.

Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority, has launched a public consultation on its plans for Littleworth Road.

Architect WestWaddy has been granted planning permission for 400 homes on farmland north of the road.

The county council wants to reduce the current 30mph limit to 20mph and to introduce a 7.5-tonne goods vehicle weight limit between the junctions with Sunnyside and the B4009 Oxford Road.

It also wants to install three zebra crossings in order to “facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians”.

One would be on Littleworth Road, about 250m west of its junction with Watlington Road, and another on Oxford Road, about 20m north-west of a planned roundabout junction with Littleworth Road and Churchfield Lane.

The third would be on Watlington Road, about 40m east of its junction with Littleworth Road.

A new roundabout would also be constructed and other traffic-calming measures introduced, says the council.

The consultation closes on February 10. To respond, visit https://consultations.oxfordshire.

WestWaddy secured planning permission for 107 houses and 52 retirement flats and bungalows in the first phase of the project after winning an appeal.

Now Cala Homes wants to build 187 homes under revised plans which don’t include any retirement homes in order to provide what it says will be more choice of properties.
