Village could be facing up to 800 new homes

A DEVELOPER wants to build 84 homes in Benson, bringing the potential total of new properties in the village to almost 800.

Thomas Homes, of Thatcham, has earmarked 3.5 hectares of farmland to the west of Hale Road for development.

In a letter to South Oxfordshire District Council, the planning authority, chartered town planners JPPC says: “The proposed development would comprise a number of new buildings which would not exceed three storeys.”

Another developer, WestWaddy, already has planning permission to build 400 homes on farmland north of Littleworth Road and is sizing up another plot to the south of Watlington Road behind homes in Blacklands Road for 180 homes.

Meanwhile, Gladman Developments has applied to build 130 homes near Benson airfield.

The rash of applications comes as the parish council prepares a “fast track” neighbourhood plan designed to give communities more say over housing developments.

A draft version of the plan is expected to be ready in January.
