Henley dent Burghfield’s Unity League title hopes

Skip Gill Robins led her triple to a 17-12 win with Jim Woodford’s triple following the example and finishing four shots ahead while skip Barrie Davies’ triple were two shots in front at the end. David Maybury and his triple were 7-1 down after six ends but fought their way back to claim a draw. John Hawthorne’s triple found it difficult to make an impression on their opponents though they managed to reduce the deficit by scoring a four on the last end.

HENLEY lost out to BRENTWOOD in a six mixed rinks friendly, going down by 119 shots to 97.

HENLEY MEN narrowly went down to a 62-61 defeat at home to MAIDENHEAD TOWN in a four triples friendly match in which both sides won two rinks each.

SHIPLAKE defeated visitors HOOK at the Memorial Ground last Saturday in a mixed triples friendly by 29 shots. The hosts were successful on four of the six rinks played.

David Steel’s triple recorded the best win, winning the last eight ends and finishing 15 shots up. Roger Pitcher, although sharing the ends, won by 11. Despite a blip in the middle of the game Jim Bland came home by six. Graham Kennedy was the other winning skip for the villagers, winning by three.

Last weekend SHIPLAKE held their competition finals, starting on the Friday evening with the men’s and ladies’ singles championships with the rest played on the Sunday.

Barrie Evans lost the first three ends to Trevor Beaumont but then scored frequently to pull away and win by 12 in the men’s singles. The ladies’ final was a marathon with the lead changing hands eight times before Wendy Cross scored two on the 30th end to win from Mairwen West.

The handicap competition was won by David Bullock over Wendy Cross by two shots in another closely fought game. Barry Lambourne scored steadily in the 91-up, beating Trevor Beaumont 91-69. Mark Belcher outplayed Daphne Jacob in the handicap plate, winning 21-8.

David Bullock beat Barry Lambourne in the two-wood by two sets to one (5-7, 7-4, 7-4). In the novices Jean Webb had a run-away victory over Sue Reid by 12 shots while Helen Robinson easily beat John Chamberlain in the senior citizens by 11.

It was third time lucky for Trevor Beaumont with his partner Jackie Stafford when they beat Graham Clinch and Wendy Cross by one shot in the two wood pairs. The four wood pairs was won by Sonia Stretch and Barry Lambourne over Graham Clinch and Roger Pitcher by 13 shots.

PEPPARD ran out winners in their rearranged five triples Manchester Unity League fixture at PANGBOURNE by 15 shots overall. The visitors picked up eight league points to the hosts’ four.

On rink five skip Tony Reid’s team’s result was never in contention as they finished 13 shots ahead.

PEPPARD lost out at home to SHIPLAKE last Wednesday in a five-rinks friendly match by 19 shots. Peppard had a highest winning rink, skip Tony Reid and his team lost the first two ends then forged ahead. The opposition’s attempt to fight back came too late and Peppard won by eight shots.

PEPPARD held their finals days last weekend where Paul Smith and Liz Waterfall triumphed in the President’s Cup. Ken Stewart and Peter Watkins were runners-up.
