SHIPLAKE’S first competitive game of the season saw them eased to a 52-shot victory against CAVERSHAM in the Plomer Cup as they picked up 12 league points.
The early ends of the match saw both teams take a while to settle down before Matt Shepherd gradually pulled away when they picked up a five midway through.
Caversham managed to level the scores after 16 ends thanks to their skip, who on a couple of occasions saved shots with her last bowl. Shiplake managed to get back on track and secure victory by three shots.
Graham Kennedy started off slowly picking up one shot from the first three ends before Shiplake picked up 14 shots without reply to take a comfortable lead. This was increased and by end 14 they had an unasailable 13 shot lead. Caversham rallied and managed to close the gap to five shots but this was short lived and Shiplake pulled away again eventually winning by seven. Jim Bland’s rink led from start to finish. They got off to a flyer running up 14 shots in the first four ends without reply. They continued to score at will and restricted Caversham to just five shots to record the home team’s highest winning rink.
Trevor Beaumont’s rink started the better of the two teams and after end 10 had built up a healthy seven shot lead. Caversham started to put together a sustained effort scoring 14 shots over the next six ends to lead by five with just five ends to play. Shiplake levelled the game going into the last end where they eventually ran out one-shot winners.
After four ends David Webb was level, before scoring freely and moving into a nine shot lead with five ends to go. Caversham had the better of these last ends but it wasn’t enough to stop Shiplake winning by seven.
