Shiplake overcome player shortage to secure cup win

HENLEY lost their opening match of the season as they went down 98-95 away to TRENTHAMS on Saturday in a mixed friendly fixture consisting of six triples.
All the rinks were closely contested with both sides winning three apiece.

On Sunday HENLEY lost out at home to Windsor’s ROYAL HOUSEHOLD CLUB. The visitors proved too strong as they triumphed on all six rinks.
SHIPLAKE’S first ladies’ friendly of the year was away to TILEHURST where they were soundly beaten by 73 shots to 32 as they lost on all three rinks.

On a cold Saturday afternoon SHIPLAKE entertained DIDCOT in a round of the Plomer Cup where the hosts were successful by five shots as they had to give 15 away on one rink owing to playing with only three players (102-97). The hosts secured eight league points to the visitors’ four.
In a topsy-turvy game the visitors scored six on the last four ends against Daphne Jacob to draw the game 24-24. Although Wendy Cross’ three finished four to the good, they went down by 11 owing to their opponents receiving 15 shots for playing against fewer players. David Bullock’s four were three down at the 13th with only 18 being scored but then scored 16 in seven ends to win by seven.
The visitors took the lead by three on the 19th before Barry Lambourne’s rink scored the same amount to draw at the finish. David Webb’s side took an early lead and stayed that way right to the end, winning by nine.

SHIPLAKE entertained ABINGDON on Sunday in a five triples mixed friendly and were defeated by 15 shots (71-86), losing on three of the four rinks.
In contention after seven ends David Bullock lost 10 shots in four ends to go down by 16. Although the first few ends were shared, Peter Christmas then pulled away to win handsomely by 18. Daphne Jacob was only one adrift at the 12th, then failed to score another shot and was soundly beaten by 14.
Sylvia Blackmore’s game changed hands six times before the visitors had the better of the exchanges near the end to win by four. One down with one to play Matt Shepherd scored a two on the final end to win by one.

WARGRAVE suffered a 74-67 defeat against MAIDEN ERLEGH on Wednesday of last week. Wargrave’s only winning rink was that of skip Roger Prew, Ray Trussler and Val Sims.
Last Friday WARGRAVE LADIES went down four shots as they lost 52-48 against DESBOROUGH. Wargrave’s only successful rink, that triumphed 22-13, was skipped by Marion Pope and consisted of Mary Coster and Val Sims.
On Sunday WARGRAVE went down 60-33 to FLACKWELL HEATH in the CT. In two friendly rinks Wargrave lost 52-37 with their only winning rink being skipped by Ray Gardiner which included David Smith and Linda Furneaux.
