Reigning champions put Burghfield to the sword

HENLEY lost out by seven shots in a five rinks mixed friendly match against visitors CAVERSHAM on Saturday.

The hosts won on just one rink as they went down 79-72.

On Sunday HENLEY went down to a 77-66 defeat at home to THAME in a mixed four rinks friendly match.

The hosts won on two rinks and lost on two.

WARGRAVE suffered a heavy 100-64 defeat in their Kennet League match against SUTTON B.

Wargrave won on one of the four rinks played. The winning rink was skipped by Ken Brooks and consisted of Brian Turnbull, George Hedges and Fred Furneaux as they triumphed 24-19.

WARGRAVE lost out 63-41 in their KLX away fixture at BRACKNELL B.

The villagers lost two rinks and won one. The winning rink, skipped by Mike Pope and made up of George Hedges and David Smith, ran out 15-13 winners.

On Sunday WARGRAVE lost three rinks and won two as they went down 110-63 at home to PALMER PARK. The best winning rink for Wargrave, that triumphed 24-10, was skipped by Mike Pope and consisted of Peter Fairchild and Jean Burton.

SHIPLAKE started their defence of the OTL â?? formerly Manchester Unity League â?? when they visited BURGHFIELD on Wednesday evening of last week where they won on four of the five rinks by 46 shots (101-57), collecting 10 points of the 12.

Wendy Cross got off to a good start, scoring 16 without reply, ending up 23 shots to the good and the highest winning rink.

Playing against her brother Brian, Daphne Jacob was evenly matched to start with but then lost the next eight ends to lose by 15. Taking the lead at the fifth end Barry Lambourne then eased ahead and was never troubled by the opposition.

Barrie Evans forged into an eight shot lead by the eighth, consolidating his authority by taking the last three ends for six shots. This was one-way traffic for Graham Kennedy as his opponents were completely out-bowled, winning by 17.

SHIPLAKE defeated visitors CARTERTON in their opening Division 1 Oxfordshire Bowls League match of the season by 91 shots to 66 to earn them five league points to their opponents’ one.

The rink skipped by Barrie Evans started slowly exchanging shots with the visitors, and at the half way mark both teams had scored eight shots. Shiplake stepped up a gear, limiting Carterton to only three in the second period, whilst scoring 25 themselves, to win by 22 shots.

Jim Bland’s four similarly were on level terms at the halfway mark, before scoring a four and a five to run out winners by seven.

Graham Kennedy’s rink gave their opponents a seven shot start before scoring and were six adrift after 12, but from then on Carterton only scored two more, while the home rink put on 10 to win by two.

The only disappointment of the evening was the rink of Barry Lambourne, which trailed from the start, and despite a spirited fightback, went down to their Carterton opponents by six.

SHIPLAKE ran out 109-89 winners away at SUTTONS on Saturday in a mixed five-rink match.

Suttons started the better of the two teams but gradually Shiplake made their way back into the game passing their opponents and winning on four of the five rinks.

There were good wins for David Webb (+13), Jim Bland (+8), Bill Copp (+4) and Wendy Cross who left it to the last wood of the match to win by one shot. Sylvia Blackmore lost out by six shots.

SHIPLAKE extended their winning run in the Plomer Cup on Sunday as they defeated WATLINGTON 108-94. The results saw Shiplake pick up 10 league points to Watlington’s two.

In a closely fought match Shiplake were successful on four of the five rinks with good wins for Trevor Beaumont (+8), Graham Kennedy (+7), Barrie Evans (+6) and Wendy Cross (+2). Daphne Jacob was the only unsuccessful skip going down by nine shots.

SHIPLAKE ran out winners by eight shots against WOODLEY in a friendly match that had to be shortened to 15 ends due to the cold wind and dark skies.

Shiplake triumphed on three of the rinks, drew on one and lost one on their way to their 71-63 win.
