Watlington thrash rivals to keep up promotion push

HOSTS HENLEY ran out winners at home in a four rinks friendly match against THE OXFORD MASONIC CLUB

HOSTS HENLEY ran out winners at home in a four rinks friendly match against THE OXFORD MASONIC CLUB on Wednesday of last week. Henley, who won on all four rinks, triumphed overall by 100 shots to 58.

Scores (Henley names): J Cross, D Woodford, R Kingston, J Eatwell 36-8; A Crisa, P Thorpe, C Ward, R Sayer 19-18; J Woodford, W Outram, V Rees, F Powell 20-12; D Palmer, H Beaumont, J Rees, B Davies 25-20.

HENLEY also triumphed in a home friendly against WARGRAVE on Saturday. Originally intended to be over five mixed triples but both clubs were able to field an extra triple for this popular annual fixture.

Henley won on three rinks and drew on one and ran out winners by 109 shots to 87.

Visitors HENLEY came away with a 72-55 victory at FARLEY HILL on Sunday as they triumphed on three of the four triples played.

Scores (Henley names): A Crisa, A Scott, D Silvester 19-8; J Bonar, L Snelgrove, B Davies 23-8; M Belcher, D Smith, F Powell 11-24; J Cross, K Lawrance, D Burdon 19-15.

HENLEY LADIES lost out at home to MAIDENHEAD TOWN LADIES in a three triples friendly.

In a match that saw Henley field two new players,, the visitors ran out winners by 13 shots overall.

Scores (Henley names): Joan Edwards, Hilary Beaumont. Di Woodford 9-13; Jasmine Weaver, Dilys Smith, Mavis Johnson 7-15; Lynn Sayer, Pat Hawes, Gill Robins 14-15.

HENLEY LADIES lost out by 46 shots to 41 at PALMER PARK in a friendly match of two triples and one pairs.

In blustery winds and near black clouds Henley won on two of the rinks and lost on one.

Scores (Henley names): Lynn Sayer, Angelika Crisa 12-21; Hilary Beaumont, Dilys Smith, Di Woodford 13-12; Jasmine Weaver, Theresa Dombey, Gill Robins 16-13.

WATLINGTON lost out to HEADINGTON in the Top Club competition.

However, in the national two fours competition Watlington triumphed 37-30 against the same opponents.

Sam Watts, Chris Gilkes, Steve Gilkes and skip Shane Cooper lost 17-14 but Vic Webb, Dave Auger, Gordon Hooker and skip Bob Gilkes won by 23-13.

WATLINGTON triumphed 93-74 in a friendly triples match against SOUTH OXFORD where they won on three of the five rinks.

WATLINGTON continued their quest for promotion to Division 1 of the Oxfordshire Men’s League by beating THAME on all five rinks, 88-58, to pick up six points to their opponents’ 0.

Scores (Watlington names): Mark Plested, Bob Thomas, Les Westcott, Chris Gilkes 27-17; Vic Webb, David Byers, Adie Trinn, Bob Gilkes 20-16; Mick Evins, Peter Clayton, Sam Watts, Steve Gilkes 23-10; Jim Trimmer, Ron Slater, Henry Franklin, Gordon Hooker 18-15.

SHIPLAKE held their annual Chairman versus President match last Saturday with the Chairman’s side coming out on top by four shots (77-73) thanks to the rink skipped by Jim Bland winning by 18 shots.

Scoring steadily all afternoon Jim Bland was 17-6 at the halfway stage before finishing +18. Good front end bowling by Phil Buckett’s rink gave him a victory over the chairman by eight.

President David Bullock led from start to finish, always scoring better per end than his opponent to finish nine to the good. Although being 9-1 down at the sixth David Webb then won the next five ends to gradually take the lead where he stayed to the end, winning by three.

SHIPLAKE triumphed in their six triples mixed friendly against MAIDEN ERLEGH on Sunday by 11 shots (105-94).

Barrie Evans’ triple had to play against a pair and lagged behind in the early stages before overtaking and winning by one. David Webb held the lead until the 10th end but then was overtaken despite scoring a six to lose by six. Roger Pitcher struggled in the early stages and was eight behind at the 16th but then picked up a five to go down by a more respective minus four.

Picking up 10 shots on the first three ends Graham Kennedy always had the measure of his opponent and although dropping a five on the 17th still won by 14. Eight down at the 12th Sylvia Blackmore scored six on the last four ends to lose by three. Always in the lead Matt Shepherd and his triple scored freely all afternoon, winning by nine.

WARGRAVE lost on all three rinks of their KLX match against CROWTHORNE as they went down 66-46. Crowthorne secured all 10 points.

In a friendly match against HURST on Sunday, WARGRAVE went down by 84 shots to 59, losing on four of the five rinks played.

The winning Wargrave rink, skipped by Ken Brooks and consisting Linda Furneaux and Brian Turnbull, triumphed 14-13.
