Hosts find going tough against county rivals

HENLEY lost out at home to HEADINGTON on Sunday in a five mixed triples friendly match.

HENLEY lost out at home to HEADINGTON on Sunday in a five mixed triples friendly match. The hosts won on just one of the rinks as they lost out by 91 shots to 71.

Skip Peter Borsberry saw his triple recover by 6-0 down to lead 13-7 at halfway. The visitors fought back to take the lead by three shots on the last end to ensure a 22-21 win for the hosts.

David Burdon with Jeanie Davies and Keith Lawrance were always a few shots off the lead and finished three shots down while Colin Ward’s triple, with Peter Field and Brian Borsberry, after a close game eventually lost out by six shots. Kevin Browne with Theresa Dombey, who won half the ends, succumbed by 17 shots to 10. Len Snelgrove and Val Rees, skipped by Barrie Davies, went down 15-10.

PALMER PARK won on four of the five rinks to defeat hosts HENLEY on Wednesday of last week in the Oddfellows Triples League by 104 shots to 66.

After five ends the overall score was 20-20, with Henley leading on two rinks and Palmer Park leading on three. After 10 ends heavy rain had stopped with the visitors 51-39 ahead. Palmer Park then went on to pass the 100 shots mark to secure victory.

Gill Robins’ team of Janet Thompson, and Kevin Browne were the only winning rink scoring 23-15.

WARGRAVE lost out by one shot in a friendly match against HURST on Tuesday of last week.

Hurst won a vital two points on the last end to give them an overall 47-46 win despite Wargrave winning on two of the three rinks played.

The winning Wargrave winning rinks consisted of Hilde Jones, Val Sims and Mary Trussler and Sue Winters, Jean Burton and Marion Pope.

WARGRAVE MEN lost out to MAIDENHEAD TOWN B in their Kennet match on Tuesday of last week by 70 shots to 62. The result earned Wargrave just two league points to Maidenhead’s 12.

On Saturday WARGRAVE, despite winning on three of the five rinks, went down to a 90-67 defeat against WEXHAM.

The Wargrave winning rinks consisted of Hilde Jones, David Voller and Ken Brooks, Ken Jones, George Smith and Graham Whiting and Stan Crooks, Doreen Blake and Mike Pope.

SHIPLAKE went down by 23 shots at home to HURST on Saturday in the Oddfellows Triples League. Both sides won two games and drew the other with Shiplake picking up five points to their opponents’ 14.

In a close game where the lead changed hands several times, Dave Webb went into the 21st end level and scored a much needed one, to win by 18-17. Another see-saw game saw Barrie Evans’ four up with two ends to play before dropping two twos to share the spoils. Jim Bland’s triple were completely out-bowled all afternoon, going down by 25 while Daphne Jacob’s rink, who was five shots down, won the last six ends to come home by three. Three up going into the last end Graham Kennedy dropped a five to lose by two.

Sunday saw SHIPLAKE travel to GREAT HOLLANDS in a five triples mixed friendly where they were successful by 21 shots.

Scores (Shiplake names): D Lloyd, R Copp, B Copp 20-9; C Gutteridge, S Cranstoun, H West 17-14; M Bullock, P Main, D Bullock 30-11; M West, J Gutteridge, M Stafford 19-23; A Main, P Leen, M Cranstoun 19-27.

On the same day County Top Club holders SHIPLAKE defeated HANBOROUGH to secure a quarter-final place against Witney Town.

In the singles, Margaret Bullock had a run-away victory over her opponent, winning 21-5. After losing the first three ends Jean Buckett and Sylvia Blackmore levelled at the 19th only to lose the next two and by three at the finish to lose 17-14.

The triple of Jean Webb, Sue Pitcher and Daphne Jacob were 8-1 up by the fifth and kept their advantage to win 20-13.

Pat Walker, Sue Reid, Ruth Copp and Wendy Cross in the fours were behind from the start and eventually drew level at the 10th; they then picked up a six on the 12th to give them a lead where they kept it to the 21st to win 23-20.

On Thursday of last week SHIPLAKE lost out by just one shot against SOUTH OXFORD in Division 1 of the Oxfordshire Bowls League as they went down 82-81. The visitors secured four league points to the hosts’ two.
