Spacious apartment in a magnificent mansion

The future incumbents of a mansion house cannot fail to be feel privileged to enjoy the beauty, harmony and elegant proportions of this magnificent building set in its equally splendid seven acres of landscaped gardens, with views across the Thames to rural Oxfordshire giving the impression of being in the depth of the countryside, but in fact just a short distance from Reading town centre.

Run your hand over the highly polished majestic mahogany doors in all their glory. Push them open with their little cherub (brass) handles, and step into the main living room dazzlingly filled with light streaming in from the four enormous beautifully proportioned Georgian windows.

Look into the Humphrey Repton designed garden through the quaintly distorted original glass windows and you will begin to get a feel for what it must have been like to have enjoyed a dance or social evening of the decadent nature that the privileged people in the early 19th century enjoyed.

We know that the man who commissioned Purley Magna to be built, Anthony Morris Storer, was a man of fashion, an accomplished dancer and a gambler, so it is easy to imagine elegantly dressed ladies, stepping down from their carriages under the porch built purposefully of a height to take the carriages so they wouldn’t get wet if it was raining, and into the entrance hall of Purley Magna, excited at the prospect of an entertaining evening, catching up with her friends and hearing all the latest society gossip.

We can imagine the 12 ft high double doors left open to reveal the dining room and garden beyond and no doubt leave a suitable admiring first impression on the visitor.
