Help Henley celebrate Christmas with a tree

BUSINESSES have two weeks left to sign up to Henley’s small Christmas trees scheme.

The initiative is run by the town council and the trees with white lights are supplied by Windowflowers. The deadline for orders is Friday, October 31.

Businesses can hire them and they will be put in place by Windowflowers during November ready for the start of the festive season.

The lights on the trees, together with the cross-street lights, will be switched on at the late-night Switch on and Shop event on Friday, November 21 by TV presenter Anna Williamson, alongside the Mayor of Henley Martin Akehurst.

Shops are set to stay open until 8pm along with the town’s Christmas market. There will also be a snow machine and Brakspear pubs in the town are being encouraged to join in by offering a special deal for the night.

It is hoped the event will also see other business offering special promotions between 5pm and 8pm to kick off the Christmas season. There will be a stage outside Starbucks in Market Place and choirs and performers will entertain the crowds. The event is a new initiative between the town council and South Oxfordshire District Council to promote local trade.

Town centre manager Peter McConnell said: “We are aware that this has been tried before but we hope that by bringing in a number of attractions and having the big celebrity Christmas light switch-on that residents and visitors will come into town and take the chance to get some personal service from some of our wonderful shops.”

The evening will also see the launch of the Advent Treasure Hunt. A total of 24 shops and businesses have offered prizes but contestants must get a stamp from each business on their map in order to enter the competition.

Maps will be made available on the night while shops will be given their own stock. There are prizes for adults and children, who will be encouraged to visit participants on the night.

There will also be a preview of the Living Advent Calendar. The award-winning event starts on December 1 but there will be a glimpse of a couple of the scheduled performers live in the town’s Market Place throughout the evening.
