Villagers ‘disappointed’ at sudden pub closure

A COUPLE have left the pub in Crazies Hill after just 18 months in charge.

A COUPLE have left the pub in Crazies Hill after just 18 months in charge.

John and Sarah Schlaefli took over The Horns in August 2013, six days before they were married.

Mr Schlaefli, 47, gave up his job as commercial director of the Professional Publishers Association in London to run the Brakspear pub, while Mrs Schlaefli, 41, combined the job with her commitments at her media consultancy, The Secret EA.

The couple, who moved to the village in 2012, employed 11 people and ran regular events at the pub.

Brakspear said Mr Schlaefli had returned the keys and that the pub was closed while a search was made for a new tenant. The pub has had six landlords in as many years.

Dave Smith, who lives in Crazies Hill, said, “I’m disappointed the pub has shut because it’s the focal point of the village. John worked very hard to make a go of it but like all country pubs you need people to come in the evenings. It seems as though they were up against it but they were always very friendly.”

Fellow villager Tess Dixon said, “The village doesn’t have a focal point apart from the pub so it’s essential to keep the community going. Sadly, we’ve seen a series of landlords come into The Horns and it has been very hard for them to make any money.”

Claire Fife, of Bowsey Hill, who regularly ate lunch at the pub with friends, said, “It’s very sad that the pub is closed. It’s a lovely looking pub in a nice location. John and Sarah were always very nice and so was Joe, their manager.”

Wargrave Parish Council chairman Richard Bush said, “I hope Brakspear will find a good tenant because it’s worthwhile for the local community.”
