A planning application to revamp the Bottle and Glass in Binfield Heath is to be submitted this month by the Phillimore Estate, which bought the pub from Brakspear for more than £400,000 in August.

Adrian Beales, of Savills, which handled the purchase for the estate, said: “We’ve had three application consultations with South Oxfordshire District Council. The planning application is to go in any day now.

“We have been liaising with the parish council so hopefully we have their support. The family are very keen to have a local pub and a community facility and that’s really why we’re doing it. It’s not a great commercial investment and we’re not doing it for that purpose.”

The estate plans to extend the Grade II listed building, which is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and refurbish the interior.

The pub would be let and it is hoped the tenant would sell beer from the Loddon Brewery, which is brewed on the estate in Dunsden.

The purchase was the latest twist for the Bottle and Glass, which has had several landlords in recent years.

The most recent was former Goring parish councillor Anthony Ewen, who vowed to turn it around when he took over in April 2013. He quit after three months to focus on his holiday business.

Before that, Graham and Jill Hughes ran the pub for almost a year. When they left, the couple said they had lost more than £35,000 because villagers did not support the pub.

The parish council registered the pub as an asset of community value with South Oxfordshire District Council. This power was introduced in the 2011 Localism Act and gives communities six months to bid on a property before it can be sold on the open market.

The Phillimore family own a 3,500-acre estate covering Dunsden, Binfield Heath, Sonning Eye and Shiplake.
